Theme Tours

Archaeology/Paleontology
The world's most famous dinosaur - "Sue", the gigantic T-rex at Chicago's Field Museum was discovered in South Dakota. Our Badlands National Park contains some of the world's richest Oligocene fossil beds, and archaeological sites across the state offer clues about early societies. You will "dig" this tour. Sorry, couldn't help that one! Really, if you've got the itch to dig, join one of our real-life excavations!

Bird Watching
Elevations in the Black Hills of South Dakota range from 3,300 feet to 7,242 feet. The geographic location of the Black Hills, together with the changes in elevation and associated climatic conditions, create a unique environment where many western and eastern bird species can be found. The Prairie Potholes of South Dakota and the fact that the State is in major migratory flyways provides an endless source for birding. Here is a quite good source of info:  http://huskertsd.tripod.com/

Cathedrals of the Prairie
If you like to visit Cathedrals and Shrines, South Dakota has a wonderful vacation waiting for you. The buildings and artwork are remarkable. If you are of the Catholic faith, Christian, or just like architecture what a great pilgrimage. We have an Abbey, several historic Cathedrals and Church buildings, the Fatima Family Shrine and Apostolate. Daily Mass and even a chance for a Traditional Latin Mass if the schedule permits.

Fall Frolic

Festival of Books
The 4th Annual Festival of Books in Deadwood, SD welcomes over 80 authors to the community and provides an opportunity for readers to meet their favorite writers. This 2.5 day festival offers authors presenting their works on history, tribal writing, non-fiction, fiction and poetry, and storytelling.

Golf
Question. do you know which state in the USA is the best for golfers? I think you know this one (or have made an educated guess). South Dakota! We have the lowest number (556) of people per golf hole. You will also get variety, from the beautiful Black Hills to the rolling prairies. We might even be able to find a course with sand "greens".

Ghost Mines & Ghost Towns
The Black Hills of South Dakota were once filled with many small communities, most associated with the Gold Rush which was started in 1874 by General George Custer. Depending on your time frame, we will invite local historians to drive with us. Come and explore!

Lewis & Clark
Lewis and Clark spent the late summer and early fall of 1804 exploring present-day South Dakota. Their return trip, in 1806, led them back through the area. Follow in the footsteps of the Corps of Engineers along the Missouri River. Walk where they walked, see what they saw and feel what they felt as the sometimes wild and isolated trail is revealed. Now, 200 years later, you too can experience the same rugged adventure along South Dakota's Lewis and Clark Trail.

Native American
With this theme tour, we will concentrate on Native American events, people, and places. As some events and places are sacred to the Native American people, proper etiquette and care are the foremost concern. Also, because of this sacred nature, strict attention must be paid to the schedules that are set. Contact us to learn more about specific dates and events for Pow-Wows, Hoop Dancing, etc.

Photography
Travel the state, or pick a particular region, or even a specific event (example: Pow-Wow) or town. 605Touring Co. has available a talented in-state guide that will help you find the right picture and idea you are looking for. This is great fun, not only for the serious photographer, but also for the novice.

Sporting & Recreation
Or, we could call this theme: Strenuous. This tour is only for those in good physical shape. Hiking and Biking in the Badlands and Black Hills. Rock climbing training. Hike up Harney Peak, the highest point in South Dakota (7242ft). We can have a bit of fun on the way too. For example, how about a night stop at a hunting lodge to shoot some clay pigeons?

Theatre & Art
South Dakota has many talented artists. The Native American people can not only do their traditional crafts, but also contemporary, or a variation. Saddlemaking is a rare sight. The Terry Redlin Art Gallery. The Natural Colored Wool Studio. Canes, Scandanavian Nalbinding, Basketry. Also, the Black Hills Passion Play, and Black Hills Playhouse offer some of the finest thought and entertainment anywhere.
